A Convergence of Life and Faith...: The Tension of... →
bobbyslee: I have always viewed freedom as “bliss” or some kind of feeling of elation. The picture in my mind is that of the many movies I’ve seen where the adrenaline-filled protagonist screams out “Freedom!!!” as they march on to victory. It’s usually a victory from some kind of tyranny so freedom is more obvious and more naturally feels great and liberating….

venomous porridge: An honest question for the TSA →
dwineman: Every day at your airport checkpoints, you screen thousands of passengers for objects that could conceivably be used as a weapons…. I try not to actually think about the TSA because otherwise I get sad.

John's Tumblr: Steve Jobs →
Last Steve Jobs thing from me, I swear….but this is a good one from former Mozilla CEO, John Lilly. lilly: I’m finding my feelings to be pretty complex, which I guess isn’t too surprising given who he was. But for a man I’ve never met, I’m a little surprised about how much of my thinking he’s affected, and how many competing feelings I’ve got.

American McCarver: Anti-Moneyball →
americanmccarver: Bryan Hoch, reporting for MLB.com: Jorge Posada came through with the big hit to clinch the American League East for the Yankees, and they’ll look to the veteran for more contributions as the designated hitter in the AL Division Series. Manager Joe Girardi has confirmed that he plans to use… Yes, well anti-moneyball because they’re the Yankees. Moneyball is the...

American McCarver: The worm in The Hall →
americanmccarver: Dennis Rodman is being enshrined in the Basketball Hall of Fame today. I loved watching Rodman play. He quietly antagonized every opponent, got in their heads, made them take the first swing, and then manage to look at the referee with genuine shock, SHOCK!, when he was called for a foul…

American McCarver: About that stolen base... →
americanmccarver: Much has already been made of Friday night’s Giants v. Phillies skirmish. But today’s New York Times interview with MLB disciplinarian (and former Dodger!) Joe Torre is taking it as a given that Rollin’s stolen base is the de facto cause. Let’s review the facts: Top of the 6th, Phillies lead 6-2… Except it was 8-2, a 6 run lead. (Rollins scored two and then stole...

Coyote Tracks: Cattle Guards →
chipotle: Okay, here’s the challenge: explain why the scenario I’ve just described is good when Google did it with Android, but bad when Microsoft did it with Microsoft [Internet] Explorer… Easy- Microsoft illegally leveraged their monopoly by pre-installing IE, defaulting most people who didn’t know better to an inferior browser. Google leveraged their brand and talent to...

American McCarver: The Accidental Hall of Famer →
americanmccarver: In March of 1999, my future bride treated me to a hockey game, in which my beloved Detroit Red Wings were taking on the San Jose Sharks. (My future bride’s willingness to take me to hockey games was not why I married her, but it was certainly an argument in her favor.) The game — a rather… Ozzie! Ozzie!

Facebook
I deleted my Facebook account last year and friends have asked why. Why I liked Facebook: Aggregation and notifications. Facebook did what RSS promised to do but never did. It brought together contact info, blog posts, and photo and video sharing all in one place. This was so convenient, and really, what I wanted all along. And on top of that, Facebook gave me notifications for things I was...

Google+ and the Social Network
Google+ is not Facebook. It’s confusing because it looks almost exactly like Facebook, but Google has created it for a very different purpose. And my guess is you will use it differently than you use Facebook. Facebook started as a private friend network. It may be hard to remember what the internet was even a few years ago, but there were a number of things that made Facebook...

An encounter on a Desert Storm op
Howard Wasdin, SEAL Team Six: Of course, SEALs train to match the appropriate level of violence required by the situation, turning it up and down like the dimmer on a light switch. You don’t always want the chandeliers on bright. Sometimes you do. That switch is inside me still. I don’t want to, but I can turn it on if needed. However, the training didn’t prepare me for...

Barak Obama, The Audacity of Hope: Once we get beyond matter of self-defense, though, I’m convinced that it will almost always be in our strategic interest to act multilaterally rather than unilaterally when we use force around the world. By this, I do not mean that the UN Security Council—a body that in its structure and rules too often appears frozen in a Cold War-era time...

Warren Buffett on the tax structure
Barak Obama, The Audacity of Hope: Buffett had invited me to Omaha to discuss tax policy. More specifically, he wanted to know why Washington continued to cut taxes for people in his income bracket when the country was broke. “I did a calculation the other day,” he said as we sat down in his office. “Though I’ve never used tax shelters or had a tax planner, after...

The Truth About the American Economy →
Robert Reich to the U.S. Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions: Government could have enforced the basic bargain. But it did the opposite. It slashed public goods and investments — whacking school budgets, increasing the cost of public higher education, reducing job training, cutting public transportation and allowing bridges, ports and highways to corrode. It...
