Marco.org: More ideas than time: Last week's news
I want last week’s news, but only what I need to know, and only if it has proven to have relevance beyond the day it was published.
Tell me an overview of what happened in a given field, like technology, but with the hindsight of a week to sleep on it and evaluate what really matters. The delay also provides more time for investigation and analysis to reduce blind speculation, promote thoughtful writing, and encourage big-picture perspective.
I think BBC news does a great job of this. As an example, if you want to know more about the background of the current top story which is the violence in Kyrgyzstan, there are links in the article to BBC’s country overview- which gives general information, but has also been updated with a summary of the current crisis. From there, you can navigate to Timeline: Kyrgyzstan, a year-by-year and month-by-month overview of the key events in Kyrgyzstan history.
I agree with Marco that too many sites are just interested in the news firehose. BBC is a fantastic resource for up-to-date, big-picture summaries relevant to current world news.
